The Wardrobe Essential They’re All Talking About: Jumpsuits
Whether you call them onesies, rompers, jumpers, coveralls or trouser suits, the upcoming fashion season promises to be big on jumpsuits. The fall runways were crowded with them, with designers from Michael Kors to Chanel presenting new variations on a familiar look.
A jumpsuit is far from a new invention. The first one was invented by artist and designer Ernesto Michahelles, nicknamed “Thayat,” in 1918, in Florence, Italy. Called the TuTa, the garment was cut from a single piece of fabric. Michahelles intended the TuTa to be a universal piece of attire, worn by anyone and everyone. Instead, it was worn by upper-class Florentines as a passing fad.
Today’s onesies are far more complex, with each designer interpreting the new trend in unique cuts and fabrics. Fashionistas who are as toned and fit as Gwen Stefani can wear one like the singer recently work to Angelina Jolie’s world premiere of her move, In the Land of Blood and Honey. Stefani wore strappy sandals with her snug, white-patterned jumpsuit with a front-zipped front.
It’s not necessary to have a perfect figure to pull the jumpsuit off, however. Many onesies features drapes and ruching to flatter imperfect figures. Other have neckline detailing that draw attention to the face. All make legs look longer by presenting one single line of pattern or colour.
One of the hottest jumpsuit looks are wide-legged suits in silks and satins, intended to be worn as formal evening attire. Chanel presented an edgy, rocker jumpsuit, with leather collars and oversized pockets. The Akris jumpsuit features a halter tie top. With a blazer, the suit works well for office attire. Ready-to-wear lines feature the jumpsuit in playful prints, a great choice for travel. With so many versatile options, the jumpsuit is this year’s must-have fashion.
